Daniel Knott - Virginia Commonwealth University

When I came to Ecuador for a 4th year medical school rotation I didn't know what to expect or what to do when I got there. The staff of the foundation were incredibly helpful and became fast and close friends by the end of the experience.

They helped me find my way around town and suggested places to travel (which is very cheap and easy to do in Ecuador).

I stayed with Sonia Goercke and was able to attend a family baptism, allowing me to take in the culture and feel like a Cuencano. We made friends with the residents and students involved with the foundation and they were some of the most welcoming people I have ever met in my travels.

Working with Dr Rodas on the mobile surgery unit is an awe-inspiring testament to the power of personal ambition and dedication. He discovered a need and delivered it to the community by breaking down the barriers of western medicine and taking the OR to the patient. We worked hard and long hours, but I was able to experience a diverse and exciting country with wonderful new Ecuadorian friends along the way.
